About the work :

Actaeon is an abstract oil painting on canvas by French contemporary artist Guy Oberson.

This canvas is made up of light blue shades, soft greys and greens, all in the background with an intense red mass holding the centre foreground of the composition. The colours are textured by oil drips as well as by soft brushstrokes still visible due to the transparency of many layers of paint on the canvas. The intensity of the red is probably a reference to the mythological character and his tragic end: Acteon, who lends his name to the artwork. According to myth, he was transformed into a deer and devoured by his dogs after having watched the goddess Artemis naked in her bath. The red would thus poetically evoke the blood of the curious, but also his passionate curiosity for the goddess who would punish him.

The abstract or semi-abstract oil paintings are a very important part of Guy Oberson's work and can be compared with his figurative black chalk works. In creating his abstract works, he gains his inspiration from memory or his imagination, free from any iconic constraints.

“Art allows me to poetically restore my relationship with intimacy, otherness and the sacred. […] Being an artist is above all a daily attempt to contribute to the freedom of opinion, to independent thought and to the retransmission of energy and beauty.” Guy Oberson, interview with Philippe Piguet (Art absolutely no. 78, July-August 2017).
