About the work :

Aïssata is a work by French contemporary artist Cécile Raynal, from the "petites histoires en réserve" (tales from the storage area) series.

This figurative sandstone sculpture is a bust of a woman who is bringing both hands up to gently support her head. Her glance is distant, the viewer might well ask a penny for her thoughts.

«Often spotted respectfully checking different objects in her gloved hands. When she came into my studio I wanted to be sure that the hands of this sculpture were approaching the head with the same attention. Aïssata tells me that All Africa is on the move, that women are removing their chains. I wish them all the best, the sooner the better. »

This sculpture exhibited in the Arts et Métiers museum between 29 May and 26 Aug 2018, part of the "petites histoires en réserve" series was created during Cécile Raynal's residency behind the scenes at the museum in 2017. As per her method, the artist created busts and standing figurines of the people she met as well as animal sculptures (wolves and foxes) recurrent in the works of the artist for a few years now.
