The 20th century and the start of abstract art

Who cares how abstract an artwork is, if it cleanly answers a new feeling…” stated the Spanish sculptor, Pablo Gargallo at the beginning of the 20th century. The history of art, full of figurative and realistic representations, was given new theories at the beginning of the last century.

Vassily Kandinsky’s paintings are considered the first pieces of abstract art, initiating an art form freed from traditional imitation, following the path of Manet and Courbet’s impressionism. Whether a painting or a sculpture, abstract art represents shapes and colors for what they are, with the conviction that figurative representation is not enough to exhaust reality. Abstract art and figurative art are not however, incompatible.

Artistics’ abstract art

Our contemporary online art gallery offers fifty selected contemporary artists, some of whom carry on exploring abstract art by reinterpreting the world without resorting back to a figurative style. The Artistics gallery has chosen to select artists by virtue of their excellent technical mastery as demonstrated in their paintings, sculptures and photographs…

Our abstract art artists

Choosing abstract art is to ensure an infinity of possibilities, all suitable for delivering an exact feeling or sensation. Freed from the constraints imposed by realism, artists find powerful expressive meaning in the abstract.

As for abstract painting, the Japanese artist Hachiro Kanno delivers in his paintings a fusion between traditional Japanese calligraphy and Western abstract art. Freed from meaning, the Japanese kanji become repeated themes on the canvas or distort until they become a collection of lines where the artist’s gestures and movements can be read. Delphine Brabant’s abstract sculpture is, for its part, an astonishing collection of materials with colors and abstract shapes. Bernhard Lang’s aerial photographs offer us the possibility of gaining height: seen from the sky, the world bears witness to a different reality… abstract!
