About the work :

Athabasca is an abstract oil on canvas by French contemporary artist Guy Oberson.

This abstract piece is typical of the artist's creative work over the past decade. The delicate oil work, applied in thin transparent layers, is all done from memory and his imagination in order to offer a personal reinterpretation of abstract painting. The title also points to the affirmation of this ambivalence: inviting the spectator to guess at the Canadian Athabasca river, whilst also being a picture with unrealistic colours and shapes proving the artist's great imagination to be the main subject represented.

The abstract or semi-abstract oil paintings are a very important part of Guy Oberson's work and can be compared with his figurative black chalk works. In creating his abstract works, he gains his inspiration from memory or his imagination, free from any iconic constraints.

“Art allows me to poetically restore my relationship with intimacy, otherness and the sacred. […] Being an artist is above all a daily attempt to contribute to the freedom of opinion, to independent thought and to the retransmissionof energy and beauty.” Guy Oberson, interview with Philippe Piguet (Art absolutely no. 78, July-August 2017).
