Portraits, a reflection of the times

Ah! If it were only the other way! If it were I who was to be always young, and the picture that was to grow old! » Is the Portrait of Dorian Gray eponymous main character’s wish, by the author Oscar Wilde. This literary work embodies, in a romanticised way, the millennial belief in the real power of incarnation of the portrait. In many traditions, a portrait painting would replace the person represented.

It covers considerable parts of ancient, Egyptian and Asian art production over several centuries. With portraits depicting daily life, modern art has been able to remove the sacred aspect previously given to a portrait, turning out to be even more attractive. Contemporary art has been able to eliminate sacredness by promoting a portrait for what it is, namely a more or less realistic representation of a human form.

The portrait, whether just an element of a painting or the main subject, comes in many styles, and can be figurative as well as abstract. This is why it offers artists multiple creative and aesthetic possibilities.

Portrait painting at Artistics

The online contemporary art gallery, Artistics, follows their artists’ creativity: their rethinking the rules of art to produce pieces that moves us all, are the ambitions of our artists. Illustrating a gaze, a human figure, a silhouette: portrait painting allows them to join a re-invented tradition.

Artistics selects painters, photographers and sculptors who have attention to detail and high standards, based on their technical ability and the originality of their artwork. Among the fifty artists on our online gallery, many of the painters have taken on portraiture. As realistic as a photograph, or more abstract or even decorative, the portrait you are looking for is on Artistics.

Our portrait artists

The Dutch painter, Joachim van der Vlugt’s portrait paintings are influenced by the classical Dutch masters. Alternating between figurative and abstract, the painter’s artwork is impressive. His landscapes, portraits and figure paintings, often inspired by Renaissance works, are bathed in a particular light, giving an almost metaphysical aspect to his paintings. Like the great masters he draws inspiration from, Joachim also creates hyper-realistic model portraits on commission. He has a wide variety of work, painting on wood or canvas. His oil painting technique makes both light and dark colors shine through, at times giving the impression that the frame is holding up a mirror.

In a more graphic style, the Chinese painter Hongyu Zhang paints portraits of personalities or ordinary people using traditional Chinese calligraphy techniques, inherited from his family and culture. With Indian ink, acrylic paint and using tools such as charcoal and brush, he builds up faces with repeated lines. Honguy Zhang paints to music, which gives off energy and rhythm in his portrait paintings.
