Franco Salas Borquez : Storm at Sea

Franco Salas Borquez is a Chilean artist who has been living in France for some twenty years. Born into a family of seafarers, he chose the sea as the sole subject of his paintings. However, regardless of the often striking realism of his paintings, the artist’s quest lies elsewhere: he seeks to create an aesthetic vertigo. “I always picture this quest as an analogy”, he says, “that of being in the heart of a storm, and focusing on seeing its beauty despite the inherent danger.”

To achieve this, the artist himself strives to reach this state of vertigo, where mastery and intuition coexist. His gesture thus acquires a fluidity that allows him to connect with his subject.  “Each painting must evoke something that is beyond myself.  It is here that the mystery of creation is manifested.” Therefore, works of Franco Salas Borquez echo more intimate things, becoming a common language between the artist’s unconscious mind and that of the spectator, and connecting us to something that escapes us.
