About the work :

Penelope's weaving 3 is an abstract oil on canvas by French contemporary artist Guy Oberson.

This painting is part of the ‘Density of an Absence’ series, inspired by literary works of the ancient writer: Homer. This canvas represents an illustration of Penelope’s weaving, a classic part of the Odyssey. It tells the trick that Penelope, the wife of Ulysses, a hero who had left for twenty years, put in place so as not to marry one of the suitors, who courted her during her husband’s long absence. She would choose one of them when she had finished weaving her father-in-law’s shroud, she wove by day, and unstitched at night, so that she could wait forever.

This abstract oil on canvas is made by the layering of thin coats of oil creating a transparent effect close to the feel of fabric, whose weave can be seen. The abstract or semi-abstract oil paintings are a very important part of Guy Oberson's work and can be compared with his figurative black chalk works. In creating his abstract works, he gains his inspiration from memory or his imagination, free from any iconic constraints.

“Art allows me to poetically restore my relationship with intimacy, otherness and the sacred. […] Being an artist is above all a daily attempt to contribute to the freedom of opinion, to independent thought and to the retransmission of energy and beauty.” Guy Oberson, interview with Philippe Piguet (Art absolutely no. 78, July-August 2017).
