About the work :

Rodolphe is a portrait made with black chalk by French contemporary artist Guy Oberson.

This is a portrait of a man’s face immortalized in profile, standing out against an intense black background characteristic of black chalk. This drawing takes on a rather surreal and sombre atmosphere of memory due to the textured effect produced by the numerous vertical lines obscuring the portrait, as well as the lighting effect orchestrated by the artist.

From the start, black chalk has always characterized Guy Oberson's work. It is a drawing tool, similar to charcoal, but the blacks are even more matt and deep, and it requires impeccable control as it is irreversible. These landscapes or portraits drawings are always figurative. The artist works using a model or frequently from a photograph, which can be of a model, that of a known photographer or even an image borrowed from the media.

Guy Oberson shades the black chalk with a multitude of vertical streaks which alters the perception of the subject, making the interpretation of the artwork far less immediate. The subject is thus taken apart, loosing body, but gains in expressive intensity. The artist draws through the accumulated lines; so that the subjects emerge when they are viewed at a distance but when approached, they start to dissipate.

This artwork is signed and sold framed in a black american box.
