Animal sculpture: a millenary history

Mr. Barye’s bronze lion is as frightening as if it were real!” exclaimed a journalist from the famous Revue des Deux Mondes in 1836. He was referring to the Salon’s exhibition of the artwork by the sculptor: Antoine-Louis Barye, the surprisingly realistic ‘The Lion with a Snake’. This work is interesting as it is representative of a real turning point in the history of animal sculpture.

Before the end of the 18th century, or even the beginning of the 19th, men produced sculptures of animals with mythological meanings. The emergence of intellectual currents such as naturalism, which consecrated the scientific accuracy of representation, influenced artistic production by making it more realistic. The interest of reproduction was no longer the anatomical study of species but the interior or exterior decoration. Hence, unlike the Sphinx of Giza, a monumental mythological sculpture where the lion’s physical strength mixes with human wisdom in a very symbolic association, ‘The Lion with a Snake’ represents an animal in a realistic way. His attack stance makes his muscles, teeth and claws stand out, and his coat has an almost textured effect. Thus, in the case of the Sphinx, the lion is a materialistic symbol of power and grandeur, in Barye’s work it becomes an embodiment of biological realities that definitively associates animal sculptures with figurative art. Sculptures of animals are commonplace in several cultures such as Asian arts as well. Statues and other ancient statuettes of dragons, tigers, rabbits, or even dogs sell for exorbitant prices. More than just simple ornaments, they have a symbolic meaning and in particular embody the Chinese zodiac signs where animals vary each year.

Although Pierre Yermia also creates human figures, animal sculptures are an essential part of his work. His animal collection is made up of a wide variety of animals sculptures: birds, big cats, bulls and horses… The full-bodied figures of these animals rest on thin, slender legs. This trait, common to all, creates lightness whilst at the same time an impression of strength and fragility.

The Franco-Argentinean artist, Marie-Louise Sorbac, specialises in animal sculptures. In a style marked by the influence of the French sculptor François Pompon, she produces sculptures of monkeys, penguins and elephants with rounded and curvaceous physique. She does not shy away from varying the color of the patinas from black to gold with each edition. By giving a first name to each of her animal sculptures, she creates a poetic and amusing world.
