Technique and medium: the richness of ceramic sculpture

Sculpture is more of a generic term in art referring to a large sized artwork, rather than a particular artistic creative technique. Indeed, it covers many methods, techniques and materials which by association, have given their names to older sculpturing practices. A typical example is ceramic sculpture. Ceramic first identifies the material, fired clay, then associates it to the manufacturing process and then to the firing of valuable items.

Long since imported from Asia to Europe, ceramics have been practiced for millennia. In particular, it was developed in Ancient Greece, the term even gave its’ name to a district of Athens in the 5th century BC. In ceramic sculpture, artists demonstrate very extensive and precise skills: while a bronze sculpture is made in a foundry, the ceramist can look after all the manufacturing stages of the pieces in his own studio, from working the clay all the way to the firing. Ceramics comes in many forms and types, thanks especially to the richness of clay, as it offers multiple creative possibilities.

Artistics sculptures

The contemporary art gallery Artistics supports and promotes bold and talented artists who know how to use ancient techniques, updating them with their imagination and in their artwork. You can find over 2,000 contemporary sculptures, paintings and photographic artworks on our website. These works are the creations of some fifty international artists, all brought together by the originality of their artwork and the great technical mastery they demonstrate in their favorite medium. Notably, ceramic sculpture artists produce new and innovative works by reinventing creative techniques, from working the clay to the firing.

Our clay and ceramic sculptors

Our sculptors go through all the processes working the clay to create emotion and surprise. The sculptor Cécile Raynal works with sandstone, a very resistant clay, which she fires using a special smoking technique. Whilst staying in places steeped with unique stories, she sculpts portraits or figures, of the people she meets. Her very expressive pieces tell stories, as if she gave a silent voice to her motionless companions.

The Artistics artists also bring together ceramic sculpture and abstract forms. Tien Wen produces abstract sculptures pure in form, freed from all functionality. If his vertical and slender pieces can remind us of vases, Tien Wen goes further in closing the container which then becomes a real work of art. Tien uses the unique Raku technique, a Japanese enamelling process, to color his works of art in a refined and subtle way.

Between abstract and figurative, Sharon Brill’s ceramic sculpture takes on an organic aspect reminiscent of the original natural elements in a ceramic. The Israeli sculptor is inspired by nature, in particular by the sea, she crafts abstract forms from the clay whose dynamism is especially reminiscent of the movement of waves.
