About the work :

Winternight, is a photograph by the Norwegian artist Christian Houge from the series "Arctic Technology", Spitsbergen, 2012-2013.

Dimensions : 66 x 200 cm.

`Many of my projects explore the contrast and symbiosis between nature and culture. This art project has taken me deep into the arctic landscape on Spitsbergen throughout the past seven years, on ten trips in total. I have become obsessed with the fantastic contrasts between the primal landscape and technology, between Man and the manmade; between our extrovert search for knowledge, and our introvert search for insight. Man has always been searching in an outwardly direction to find answers and often needs to believe in something larger than himself to find meaning.` All of the photographs from ” Arctic Technology” are from Spitsbergen, known for its exotic arctic landscape, magical light and the cleanest place on earth for atmospheric studies. The island, located 78 degrees North, is ideal for many types of research and communications through different types of antenna installations. Because of the islands Northernly position, these, often gigantic, tehnical installations, are set up in the primal landscape to search for answers out into the atmosphere. Space research is also a large part of the work being done here and scientists have for years flocked to the island to do space and climate research Christian says: I use contrasts in all my projects. Juxtaposing past and present is a theme which am exploring at the moment. I like the fact that one needs to visualize the finished image and composition before even setting up the tripod for this totally manual and heavy equipement. This visualization calls for extreme concentration, while i find a sense of calm in the fact that many of the images are made on extreme exposure times up to as long as four hours in moonlight.
